A solar power initiative to install 25 megawatts of solar capacity across its Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses is currently underway at the University of Michigan. This project supports U-M’s commitment to sustainability, working to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reach carbon neutrality goals by 2040.

What is the timeline for design and launch?

This initiative will span three years, starting in 2025 in Ann Arbor. Subsequent phases will include installations at UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint.

Where will solar sites be located?

The Ann Arbor campus will host 20 MW of solar capacity with UM-Dearborn and UM-Flint collectively hosting 5 MW of solar capacity.Initial installations will focus on building rooftops and existing parking areas, with specific sites to be announced as the project progresses. The solar panels will connect directly to buildings or the university's electric distribution system, ensuring the generated energy is utilized on campus.

When did this concept begin?

The solar installations are part of the university’s Campus Plan 2050, which was released Sept. 30, 2024, and guides comprehensive campus development for the next 25 years. The effort also reflects the commitment of the university’s Look to Michigan "Energy, Climate Action, Sustainability and Environmental Equity" impact area.

Why solar power?

This initiative leads to several benefits including a reduction in operational expenses over time, a positive impact on the environment and improved reliability and sustainability of the campus energy supply.
